Practice As You Play

Hardly a net goes by without me smiling (inwardly) at the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the majority of cricketers.

“Last 6, 15 to win” to a batter who has hit a boundary twice in their career may be a fun way to end a net (only relevant if the rest of the net has been serious, focussed practice), but ultimately is a waste of everyone’s time.

IF you are going to practice power hitting, and everyone should, then dedicate whole sessions to it: build up from feeds to throwdowns, target areas to hit, video your practice.

In many ways nets are better for bowlers as they can practice and see the results of developing certain skills, but again be realistic. A 40mph bouncer it may be to you, but it’s a slow long hop to the batter!

The point I like to make is ‘know your game’ and practice your game: get better at what you do most of in a game, and the chances are you will contribute more to your team BUT this depends on having a captain who knows your game and uses you in a consistent way which utilises your skills.
