Over the last 3 years we have very much been finding our feet, and figuring out where (and how) we can enable diversity and inclusivity in cricket, and promote whakapapa.
Most things we have tried have worked, some better than others, and some with greater capacity for progression, which has been the main criteria we have used in determining what we will focus on moving forward.
Projects need clear measurements and key performance indicators to know they are working, and they need to have progression so that people see the benefit of investing their time as there is longevity, challenge and reward in their investment.
On The Field
The model we have created and will concentrate on is the one which works with players from marginalised communities (we have identified 4 to work with as we develop), and create fixtures so they experience playing in a strong competitive team against experienced players. This experience helps them identify and create their own development and training plans, which they can take back to their clubs, and which we can support through coaching and mentoring.
Of course ‘on the field’ isn’t limited to players and we will continue to develop our network of ambassadors and mentors to help those wanting to get involved in: scoring, umpiring, statistics, strength and conditioning, coaching, photography, turf management, reporting, podcasting and other ways in which cricket can provide an outlet for a passion or a skill, combined with a welcoming, enjoyable and supportive social framework.
One thing we wont be doing is putting out sides to play Social Cricket. Others do this very well, and we will provide players to social teams when required in order that they can put a team out and players can enjoy a full game. The players we provide will be experienced players who will contribute if required, but are equally happy to ‘make up the numbers’ and offer advice if asked, and ongoing mentoring if requested.
Off The Field
Our main focus will continue to be coaching and mentoring, and we are already planning on how we will expand the winter nets next season, and form a partnership to offer enhanced coaching and mentoring.
Partnerships are vitally important (1+1=3) and in 2025 we will focus on our existing ones rather than seek new ones.
Whilst it is very much a case of “carry on as you are” an area we want to develop is posting more views and opinions on the direction cricket is heading, and to try and identify what inclusivity and diversity in cricket should look like, and how club cricket can shoehorn all the new initiatives and teams into a fixed structure, which is already under immense pressure.
Ambitious? Certainly!
In 2024 we added some grear people to the team, and this is the first year for them to really shine, so if you want to join them and help please do get in touch.
An area we have tentatively started to explore are a couple of collaborative projects to showcase inclusivity and diversity in cricket.
We are also going to give the site (and socials) a long overdue upgrade during the pre season!
