Meg Lay (@meglaynz) is the Sports Turf Professional for Gloucestershire Cricket and Western Storm. One of the first female member of ground staff working at an international ground, she led the all-female ground staff in charge of the pitch for the Woman’s Ashes IT20 at Edgbaston for the England v Australia match on 1st July 2023.
We are absolutely delighted that she is joining the mentoring team at NBCC, not least because as she is from New Zealand she already knew about whakapapa! A keen cricketer she will be playing for our womens and girls’ team (subject to availability), but her main contribution will be as a mentor to women and girls’ wanting to get involved in cricket or in a traditionally male dominated career.
She is passionate about helping women join the industry, and with women accounting for just 3% of the sport turf industry (Source: Groundsmanship: Sport’s Vital Profession) and only Two women currently working full-time at international cricket venues, she is clearly not daunted by a challenge, or convention – a message we hope she is able to share with women and girls’ through her mentoring role.
