A key focus of my own coaching is equipping players to train and develop their games in their own time as well at formal net sessions, and without doubt having a training buddy helps with this, and is useful at formal net sessions as well.
The analogy I use (a lot) is learning to drive: driving lessons with the instructor to earn the skills the right way, hours practicing the skills with someone who can steer you on the right direction (couldn’t resist the pun) if you deviate from these skills.
The only real difference is that with the cricket you will probably pick a buddy who is also looking to develop their game, so you may want to call them a training partner.
Assuming you have picked someone that is available and willing, the first priority is to ensure that you both have the skills required to do the drills, both as a participant and as an aid. The best practice is quality practice, so make sure that you both understand the others training plan, the objectives of the session, and that you have the necessary skills to help your buddy improve their game ….. and video as much as you can!
